Netflix has just announced a new feature starring Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) presents Damsel, a dark fantasy in which Brown plays Elodie, a damsel chosen to marry a handsome prince; deceived by this fairytale romance, the royal family uses her as a sacrifice to pay an ancient debt.
In the new teaser trailer, a bleak world surrounds Elodie as she claws her way out of a hollow cave. Ominous music plays through beautiful landscapes and rises to a crescendo as she narrowly escapes a burst of flames firing toward her from–one can only guess– a dragon. The teaser ends with a last shot of Brown, disheveled and covered in soot, holding a long sword worn out by age. In this alternative take on medieval adventure, Brown is a damsel in distress that doesn’t need saving. “It was a very intense journey that I was so excited to design and to develop. At the core, this is such a beautiful story about a young woman becoming a strong, independent, and empowered adult. Elodie doesn’t have any kind of support. It’s a real survival experience,” director Fresnadillo says via Tudum. In this high-octane, blood-pumping adventure, Brown brings her wit and passionate performance to portray a damsel caught in the web of a twisted fairy tale.
Written by Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans), Damsel will also feature Robin Wright as Queen Isabelle, Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford– Elodie’s stepmother, Ray Winstone as the King, and Nick Robinson as Prince Henry. Damsel is set to stream on Netflix on March 8, 2024.
