Mark and Jay Duplass of Duplass Brothers Productions look to be in for a prosperous 2015. Coming out of Sundance, they have not only premiered their comedy The Bronze on opening night, but also walked away from Park City with a four-movie development deal with Netflix, as originally reported by Deadline.
Known for producing indie comedies such as the sleeper hit Safety Not Guaranteed and last year’s Bill Hader-Kristen Wiig collaboration The Skeleton Twins, the Duplass brothers’ brand of dramedy has been a success for the pair thus far. They are also in the midst of their television series Togetherness, in which Mark Duplass stars, airing on HBO.
The type of deal the Duplass brothers have struck with Netflix is becoming a modus operandi for the internet giant. In the tail-end of 2014, the streaming company inked a similar 4-picture deal with Adam Sandler and has planned a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon sequel as well. In response to the recent deal, Netflix credits their love for indie filmmaking:
We’ve been working with [the Duplass Brothers] from the very beginning, when we were red-envelope delivery. Independent film has always been a big part of Netflix, and the reason we do things like the Adam Sandler deal, is so we can do things like this as well.”
Specifics about the Duplass-produced films are still unknown, however, each will premiere separately on Netflix, spaced within short theatrical windows.
