This week, Netflix released official stills for its Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde, starring Ana de Armas, and now, it has released the official trailer for the highly anticipated film. Directed by Andrew Dominik and based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the film promises to explore the life of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, “both known and unknown.”
The trailer shows varying style of cinematography, switching between black-and-white, and full color. It also shows off the daring choice to make every scene based on an image of the real Marilyn. Actress Ana de Armas told Netflix Queue, “Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph”.
One of those scenes, which spans the entire trailer, is an interview between Norma Jeane (the real person behind the ‘Marilyn’ persona) and a reporter. As the trailer goes on, her answers get increasingly hopeless until she admits, “I played Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, I can’t face doing another scene with Marilyn Monroe.”
The dialogue also shares insight to the promise that the film will focus on Norma Jeane’s psychological turmoil. At the end of the trailer she says, “When I come out of my dressing room, I’m Norma Jeane I’m still her when the camera’s rolling. Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen.”
Blonde helped drum up a lot of attention toward the streamer, as the film will be rated NC-17, a rare rating on its own and the first of its kind in the streaming world and the trailer seems to have kept the hype rolling. Fans of Armas and film in general expressed their excitement under the official trailer:
“This is exactly what a trailer should be like. Give a hint of the movies premise without showing us the entire movie. Can’t wait to see it. Ana de Armas rocks.”
“This trailer leaves me with a deep sickening feeling, such a tragic figure she was. The whole thing was hauntingly beautiful, I bet the whole film’s gonna hurt even more.”
“I had shivers while watching the trailer. They really made a good choice, choosing Ana de Armas to play Marilyn Monroe. I’m loving her even more. Definitely, definitely gonna watch this movie.”
