Netflix has revealed that the streamer paid $587 million to acquire Ben Affleck’s AI firm, Interpositive. The deal was first revealed in June, though the overall purchase price wasn’t made public at that time. It wasn’t until a later Bloomberg News report that an actual number was made public, estimating the purchase at over $600 million. The actual price tag of the deal was revealed through an official SEC filing made by Netflix on Friday, June 17.
Interpositive is an AI firm founded by actor and director Ben Affleck in 2022, who also serves as the company’s CEO. The studio specializes in using AI tools trained on dailies, or raw footage from a production, to aid in production. The company states that the tools are meant to aid in certain production and post-production tasks, such as fixing lighting, reframing shots, or adjusting backgrounds.
Details about Netflix’s collaboration with Interpositive were recently revealed by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos in a quarterly earnings report. In his comments, he mentioned that over 300 Netflix productions utilized Interpositive’s AI tools. Here’s the full comment:
“Gen AI is scaling quickly across the entertainment creation process, from concept to pre-vis through post and delivery. We’re making higher-quality output more quickly and effectively than we would have using traditional methods. Gen AI workflows now have been used in roughly 300 of our titles, with the largest concentration to date in post-production. We’re leveraging gen AI for really complicated shots and sequences.”
Examples of scene types that Interpositive’s tools aid, according to Sarandos, include crowd shots and battles. With AI tools being a contentious topic throughout Hollywood due to the way it affects or can possibly entirely displace creatives in several parts of the entertainment industry, Sarandos argues in his statement that these AI tools are working towards artists, rather than against them, saying, “it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that.”
