The ever-growing popularity of Korean pop music continues on, as made evident in K-Pop Demon Hunters’ Oscar moments and its announcement of a sequel both occurring earlier this year. Further evidence of this has arrived in the form of an announcement of another movie debut on Netflix that is influenced by the Asian culture – this time it won’t be an animation.
The next Netflix project centered around Korean music is a live-action film about a struggling musician that travels to Seoul, South Korea, to compete in a Korean television game show only to discover that he has a son that lives in the same city he is visiting and that he is also a rising K-Pop star in the country who also happens to be a performer on the same show. This father-son duo story circulated around North American festivals after it premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 (including the Tribeca Film Festival in 2025) and is an intimate passion project for real-life musician, Anderson.Paak, who not only stars as the film’s protagonist but also wrote, directed, produced, and composed (in collaboration with veteran K-Pop producer, Dem Jointz) for the film. Wearing these many hats inspired Paak to explore his family’s Asian heritage (shown in the short video below) and cast his real-life son, Soul Rasheed to star in the film as his son – truly making this heartwarming comedy a family affair.
Netflix has been increasing its patterns of including more and more Korean content in its algorithm with its most prominent launch being for Squid Game back in 2021, then boosted to the multiple projects released by the streaming giant in 2025, including the origins of HUNTR/X. K-Pops! premiered exclusively in AMC Theaters on February 27 and its Netflix release will be on May 30, 2026.
