The question of whether streaming services can produce awards-season worthy content has been answered, with Netflix garnering 34 Golden Globe nominations total on the film and television fronts. Four Netflix original films, including Marriage Story, The Irishman, The Two Popes, and Dolemite Is My Name, earned nominations for Best Picture.
Noah Baumbach‘s recently released Marriage Story led with six total nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Adam Driver, Best Actress for Scarlett Johansson, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman followed with five nominations for Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese, Best Supporting Actor for both Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, and Best Screenplay. The Two Popes and Dolemite Is My Name received additional nominations for their acting and screenplays.
While many regard The Golden Globes as a precursor to who will end up taking home Oscar gold come February, nominations are determined by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of journalists separate from the Oscar-voting Academy of Motion Picture Arts. However, Marriage Story and The Irishman continue to dominate the conversation as to who will receive Academy Awards nominations come their announcement on Jan. 13.
The streaming service also received 17 nominations on the television front, the most of any network.
The 77th Golden Globes will air Sunday, Jan. 5, on NBC.
