This week at SXSW, Netflix debuted their upcoming film The Most Hated Woman in America. This comes before the films scheduled streaming release date of March 24th. The film is based on the true story of Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the boisterous founder of American Atheists, a non-profit organization established to protect the rights of America’s Atheist citizens. O’Hair met her demise when an ex-con employee of hers kidnapped and murdered her along with her son and granddaughter.
The low-budget indie was shot in a mere 18 days, and was written and directed by Tommy O’Haver (An American Crime). The film stars Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Figher) in the lead role and also includes Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, Juno Temple, Michael Chernus, Sally Kirkland, Alex Frost, and Rory Cochrane to name a few. The screenplay was also co-written by Irene Turner who also co-wrote with O’Haver on An American Crime.
The trailer looks as though the film will focus mostly on the search for O’Hair and her family. A few of the first clips show her past and explain how she built what seems to be a strangely lucrative non-profit. However the remainder of the trailer gives us the sense that we’ll be spending most of our time watching her captors threaten her for money while Adam Scott attempts to discover her whereabouts.
