Netflix has acquired the rights to José Padilha’s upcoming action film Sharp, film about the world of expert knife fighting. Nicolette Noble will write the script along with Padilha. Stampede Ventures will produce. This will be Padilha’s return to Netflix after a long collaboration on the Narcos and Narcos: Mexico series.
Sharp will tell the story of a globally-sychronized hit that goes wrong between a group of six knife-wielding assassins, who are then forced to work together to save themselves and find out who betrayed them.
According to Deadline, when asked about the film, Padilha and Noble stated that they, “…read at least 20 books on blades, from different times and cultures, before writing Sharp. It boils down to this: gunfights are often anonymous; you can shoot someone from afar. Knife fights are always intimate, up close, and personal. We’re happy Netflix got the point, no pun intended”.
Padilha directs and is a producer with Greg Silverman of Stampede Ventures. Taylor Zea will oversee the project for Netflix.
Padilha is known for his films RoboCop, Bus 174, and The Elite Squad 2, which the latter is the highest-grossing Brazilian film of all time. He is currently wrapping up production on Narcos: Mexico‘s third season.Padilha and Noble are represented by Management 360 and Sue Bodine at Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard.
