When it was first released for the Chinese New Year holiday at the start of this year, Ne Zha 2 became a smash-hit at the box office. Even now, months after its debut, it managed to climb right back up to the top of the box office in China.
Ne Zha 2 follows the attempts of Tai Yi Zhen Ren to keep the physical bodies of risen deities in tact. Although their souls are kept safe, they must go through many obstacles to success in keeping their bodies whole if they can ever come back.
When it first hit the scene, Ne Zha 2 became one of the highest grossing movies ever. The film grossed over $1 billion in its home territory, and managed to procure even more once it rolled out internationally. Within the US, it was able to take home $20 million across its run earlier in the year.
Within its run so far, the film has grossed more than $2 billion. It currently boasts the title of the highest-grossing animated film, and is giving other box office titans like Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens a literal run for their money.
Variety notes that after the past weekend, Ne Zha 2 overtook the reigning champion of We Girls to claim the number one spot at the Chinese box office once again. Ne Zha 2 took home $4 million over the weekend, while We Girls had roughly $3.8 million.
