A third sequel for the beloved National Treasure franchise is reportedly confirmed to be in the works for Disney, with screenplay currently written by Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremmer. The writer has worked closely alongside with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the three Bad Boys movies and two National Treasure movies.
The National Treasure movies didn’t receive the most positive of reviews, scoring 46% and 36% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively. Nevertheless, both movies were box office hits at the time, grossing $347 million worldwide for the 2004 original and $457 million for 2007’s National Treasure: Book Of Secrets. Since its official confirmation by Bruckheimer in September 2008, development for National Treasure 3 has been snail-paced due to limited budgetary costs and creative differences for the storyline, with fans receiving only tidbits of information every year. Therefore, fans are relieved to hear that the long-awaited sequel is finally moving forward.
Both films were directed by Jon Turtletaub, with the first starring Nicolas Cage as cryptologist Benjamin Franklin Gates, who attempts to solve a thrilling treasure hunt set by the Founding Fathers using the Declaration of Independence. 2007’s National Treasure: Book Of Secrets centered around Gates attempting to clear his ancestor’s name using the missing pages of John Wilkes Booth’s diary. Though the plot for National Treasure 3 has not been revealed yet, fans have speculated that it would address the secret behind “page 47,” a page in the U.S. President’s secret book whose contents he asked Gates to look at. One thing is for sure: just like the other movies, the sequel is bound to promise a mix of adventure, complex puzzles featuring historical artifacts and Cage’s contagious energy.
