A highly anticipated film of 2020, Marvel’s Black Widow has finally dropped its first teaser trailer, shining major light onto Natasha Romanov/ Black Widow’s mysterious past. Played by Scarlett Johansson, this is the character’s first stand alone film and is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
Though Natasha met her untimely end in Avengers: Endgame, that was not the last we’d see of her. Now we are getting glimpses into her past before she joined up with Nick Fury, which we first see when we met her in 2010’s Iron Man 2.
Black Widow brings in new characters and familiar faces into the Marvel family. Florence Pugh of Midsommar fame plays Natasha’s sister, Yelena Belova. Rachel Weisz and David Harbour round out the intense misfit family that she must come home to confront. The villain of the film has also been confirmed in this trailer as The Taskmaster, who in the comics can absorb the power of his opponents and deflect it back at them with deadly force.
The trailer starts off by showing us where she’s been- we see glimpses of her in the Red Room assassin program we learned about in Avengers: Age of Ultron, working with S.H.I.E.L.D., and sharing a moment with close friend Hawkeye. In order to protect what’s she earned, she has to abruptly travel back to her home, where she has a heated confrontation with her sister Yelena that ends in a standoff.
A greater threat looms, though, as we see complex military compounds, a villain wielding a bow and arrow from a tactical vehicle, and mass amounts of debris and wreckage falling from the sky. Harbour’s Red Guardian gears up for the fight in what looks like an attempt at a Captain America style uniform, which does nothing to impress Weisz’s mysterious character Melina. Though the trailer obscures much of the plot of the film, as this is only the first teaser, it looks like we will be getting more insight into Black Widow’s upbringing and what darkness her past truly holds.
The action packed first teaser can be seen below along with a new poster. This is the first footage available since the sneak peak that was shown to fans at San Diego Comic Con, but was never publicly released.
Directed by Cate Shortland, the film debuts on May 1, 2020.
