After taking a quick hiatus following her appearances in Marvel‘s first two Thor films, Natalie Portman is coming into 2015 hot with several buzz-worthy projects as well as new iconic role. Portman will be filling the prestigious shoes of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for the film On the Basis of Sex, according to Deadline.
Ginsburg, appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton, was the second female justice after Sandra Day O’Connor and the very first Jewish female justice. The film plans to tell the story of Ginsburg’s rise through the judicial system and the obstacles she faced along the way—prominently regarding the equal rights of women. Throughout her career, she has been known as an advocate for women’s rights. The movie will follow a Black Listed script by Daniel Stiepleman and will be directed by Marielle Heller.
Heller has just come away from an explosive debut at Sundance for her first feature film Diary of Teenage Girl. Starring Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Alexander Skarsgard (TV’s True Blood), and newcomer Bel Powley, the film made quite an impact among audiences with its fearless subject matter, depicting a young girl’s sexual exploration. If that film doesn’t make it clear, On the Basis of Sex will surely prove Heller’s dedication to the depiction of the female voice.
For Oscar-winner Portman (Black Swan), this role could be quite a challenge, but one with a potentially huge payoff. Her only previous experience with leading a biopic was in 2008’s The Other Boleyn Girl, in which she portrayed Anne Boleyn. The fact that Ginsburg is actually still living, however, makes the stakes for this role a bit higher. Before we see Portman tackle Ginsburg, audiences will be seeing her in two Terrence Malick flicks, Knight of Cups and Weightless; in her directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness; and finally in the long-awaited western Jane Got Gun.
