Based on the BP oil spill disaster in 2010, Deepwater Horizon follows the men and women aboard the oil rig leading up to the explosion and subsequent spill. Kate Hudson has signed on to play the wife of the oil rig’s engineer, played by Mark Wahlberg. John Malkovich has also joined the movie as a BP executive.
The movie is actually based on the New York Times article “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours,” written by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul in December 2010 (you can read it here), which showcased the lives of the people aboard the oil rig when it exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 people, wounding 16, and causing the worst oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry.
Hudson and Malkovich join Mark Wahlberg playing Mike Williams, Dylan O’Brien (TV’s Teen Wolf) playing Caleb Holloway, Gina Rodriguez (TV’s Jane the Virgin) playing Andrea Fleytas, and Kurt Russell in an unannounced role. The disaster movie is directed by Peter Berg, who took over the project when J. C. Chandor bowed out, and was written for the screen by Matthew Carnahan (rewritten from the original by Matthew Sand). Kate Hudson is also starting production on two other movies, Rock the Kasbah and Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?, in which she is rumored to be playing Jennifer Lee Pryor. John Malkovich is currently filming on Dominion, and his other recent film, Unlocked, is currently in post-production.
Production on Deepwater Horizon has begun and it is expected to be released in September 2016.
