Natalie Dormer has temporarily stepped away from Westeros and The Game of Thrones to boldly enter into Japan’s haunted woods in the horror film The Forest. Formally known as Aokigahara Forest and nicknamed “Suicide Forest”, this wilderness at the base of Mount Fuji is linked with the demons of Japanese mythology and is the real life location of hundreds of suicide attempts every year. Naturally, it has all the ingredients to make a compelling horror film.
The story, written by superhero scribe David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight), follows a young woman who discovers that her twin sister has gone missing in the aforementioned forest. She immediately travels to Japan to find her sister and experiences unexplained horrors at the hands of the forest’s disturbed souls. Taylor Kinney (TV’s Chicago Fire) also stars and Jason Zada directed the film as his first feature.
The film’s first trailer sets up the mystical connection between the twins as an embedded character trait of Dormer’s Sara, likely making her psyche susceptible to the wandering souls within the forest.
Focus Features will release The Forest in theaters on January 8, 2016.
