The lucrative Thanksgiving weekend is now underway for the film industry. Disney’s newest animated endeavor, Wish, and Ridley Scott’s historical epic, Napoleon, are hitting theaters just before the holiday.
Both films are going toe-to-toe with Hunger Games: Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, which sported an opening of $44 million. It took the gold for Tuesday showings, and production company Lionsgate hopes for a high holiday turnout.
Wish garnered $2.3 million in its Tuesday previews, putting it on track for a $45-$50 million gross for the holiday stretch. About $35 million from that is expected for Friday to Sunday.
Wish joins other Disney products like The Marvels and fellow animated film Trolls Band Together, and as Hollywood Reporter points out, Disney is in dire need of Wish performing well. The Marvels continues to struggle at the box office, and many other Disney projects this year had difficulty staying afloat upon their release.
Napoleon had a strong start with $3 million in previews, looking to take in $22 million across the holiday stretch, with $16 million coming from the weekend.
The other holdover contender this weekend is Trolls Band Together, which took in $30 million on opening weekend. The film took in $4.7 million on Tuesday and will make for a close race with Wish to see which animated flick will perform better.
The specialty part of the box office also offers an impressive collection this weekend, with both The Holdovers and Saltburn expanding nationwide this weekend.
