Sony Pictures has selected filmmaker Celine Song to write a screenplay for a sequel to the 1997 hit rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding, which has recently been confirmed to be in early development.
Song just released her second directed feature, the A24 film Materialists, which starred Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. Her sophomore project earned approximately $50 million at the box office globally while scoring a certified fresh 79% on the Tomatometer. Song is best known for her film debut, 2019’s Past Lives, which received critical acclaim, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay, written by Song herself as a semi-autobiographical work, and Best Picture. Song is also known for her works as a playwright, her two published plays being Endlings and The Seagull on The Sims 4. Song is currently working on an HBO “e-sports drama series”, Damage.
The original plot of My Best Friend’s Wedding centered around best friends Julianne “Jules” and Michael, played by Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney, respectively, who agreed that if they were both “still single at 28, they would get married.” But when Michael becomes engaged to a different woman, played by Cameron Diaz, Julianne must decide in four days to break off the wedding or keep her feelings for Michael suppressed forever. The film was a box office and critical hit, making around $127 million at the domestic box office, which would be approximately $256 million today. The feature earned three Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture in Musical or Comedy, Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for Roberts, and Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for Rupert Everett.
Collider first reported on the confirmation of Song’s involvement, but it has not confirmed whether she will also direct the project.
