Musician Flying Lotus Signs a Multi-Film Deal With XYZ Films

As reported by Variety, the multi-talented Flying Lotus and his company Brainfeeder Films have partnered with Paris-based Logical Pictures and XYZ Films for a movie development deal covering multiple films that the artist will produce and direct. Logical Content Ventures, the co-production fund backed by Logical Pictures, will finance the development of future films, which will all center around the genres of horror, thriller, and a sci-fi universe. The company also secured the first-look agreement to finance and produce. The slate will span over multiple projects with XYZ Films behind producing and handling sales.

Since 2006, Ellison (Flying Lotus) has released six studio albums and composed much of the music heard on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. He attended the Los Angeles Film School and his debut film Kuso, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Ellison also attended the Hopscotch Music Festival last year, headlining alongside Animal Collective. Most recently, he executively produced and scored the Netflix anime series Yasuke, directed by LeSean Thomas from The Boondocks and starring LaKeith Stanfield from Sorry To Bother You. The film was based on the real historical figure of a famed Black samurai from 16th century Japan. Ellison has also worked with the likes of David Lynch and Alma Harel, to Hiro Murai, Khalil Jospeph, and Shinichiro Watanabe. He has been previously mentored by legendary filmmaker Terrence Malick.

Logical Pictures has also partnered with Augenschein on Maximilian Erlenwein’s next feature, The Dive, whose production wrapped last fall. Its most recent productions include The Innocents (IFC Midnight/ Cannes 2021), Pleasure, (Neon/Sundance and Cannes 2020), and The Deep (Blumhouse/Epix).  Together, the pair of XYZ Films and Flying Lotus have recently announced their sci-fi horror film Ash, which is set to begin production later this year with Flying Lotus directing.
