Disney’s Mulan is one of the most beloved films of the 1990’s Disney Animated Renaissance, which spawned other classics like Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin. One of the main reasons was partially due to her sidekick, Mushu voiced by Eddie Murphy. Obviously, many remember the character as a Dragon, not a lizard since he didn’t do that tongue thing. Well supposedly in the upcoming remake of Mulan, Mushu will not be a dragon, nor a lizard, nor even a snake, but a Phoenix.
For the live-action Mulan remake, the decision was made to add Mushu in the film, but this time as a different Ancient Chinese Creature known as the Phoenix. It is unknown why this decision was made to change Mushu’s animal appearance, since Dragons are still incredibly popular in Chinese Culture. It is also unknown as to whether Mushu will still be anthropomorphized in the remake, though Disney has presumably been in talks with Kevin Hart to voice the character. Whatever the case, long-time fans of the original film might be confused by this decision, wondering what will become of the new Mulan if one of its most recognizable characters is reanimated into a completely different creature.
Mulan is set for release on March 27th 2020.
