Sonic may have started out in the lead, but the race is now neck and neck in the final weekend of the 2024 box office. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King are continuing their holiday bout for the top spot into the weekend, even despite new releases putting up a fair share of competition.
Mufasa, serving as a prequel to show how Mufasa and Scar became close before Simba’s time, is looking at roughly $61 million across the five day holiday stretch, which lasts Christmas Day itself until the close of Sunday.
Hollywood Reporter notes, however, that Sonic may fall below in the five day stretch, but its three day total was actually higher than that of Mufasa. The long-awaited third installment, featuring Keanu Reeves as fan favorite Shadow the Hedgehog, pulled in $59.4 million in the five-day period, with a three-day weekend of about $37 million. Compared to Mufasa’s weekend gross, Sonic came out on top by about $2 million.
Robert Eggers’ newest film, Nosferatu, creeps its way into getting the bronze medal for the weekend. In its first outing, it brought in just shy of $40 million following its Christmas Day release, while garnering great reception from both critics and audiences.
The top five is rounded out by Thanksgiving holdovers like Wicked and Moana 2, warning $31.1 million and $27.9 million, respectively.
