Box Office: ‘Mufasa’ Dominates MLK Holiday Weekend, ‘One Of Them Days’ & ‘Wolf Man’ Trail Behind

SZA and Keke Palmer in 'One of Them Days'

Walt Disney Pictures’ Mufasa: The Lion King has won the top prize at the box office this Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend. Despite being its fifth week playing in theaters, Mufasa has earned $15.5M through Monday the 20th. Disney’s latest live-action effort, a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, has managed to top new entries One of Them Days and Wolf Man, which debuted at $14M and $12M, respectively.

One of Them Days stars Keke Palmer and R&B artist SZA in her first feature. The buddy comedy is a Black, female-led narrative, the first of its kind since 2017’s Girls Trip. The film currently sits at an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Universal and Blumhouse horror flick Wolf Man is a reboot of the classic 1941 The Wolf Man tale and sees a man as he transforms into a creature unrecognizable to his wife and young daughter. Directed by horror alum Leigh Whannel, Wolf Man had a reported budget of $25M.

Rounding out the Top 5 are animated features Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Moana 2, with Paramount’s Sonic 3 earning $11M over the four days. Disney’s second Top 5 entry, Moana 2, voyaged over the $1B mark worldwide over the MLK weekend. The film brought home $8.4M domestically. Heist thriller Den of Thieves 2 falls to sixth place in its second weekend, raking in $7.7M. The film debuted at first place just last weekend.

Lurking into the awards season conversation, Focus Features’ gothic horror picture Nosferatu earned $5.1M. Since Christmas, the film has grossed an impressive $90M domestically against a budget of $50M. Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet as classic American singer Bob Dylan, grossed $4.6M, and Universal’s Wicked has hung on to the Top 10 since its November release, grossing $4.5M this weekend. Rounding out our list at tenth place is the Nicole Kidman-led Babygirl. The film, directed by Halina Reijn grossed $2.4M.
