According to Variety, the critically acclaimed documentary from MTV Documentary Films, The Eternal Memory, will return to theaters in New York and Los Angeles. From Jan. 5 – 7 and 12 – 15, the documentary will screen every day in New York at THE IFC Center, and from Jan. 6 – 8 and 13 – 15, it will screen every day in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Glendale and Monica Film Centers.
The Eternal Memory originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, winning the festival’s Grand Jury Prize World Cinema – Documentary award. The film has also received several other awards on the festival circuit; the documentary also made it onto the 96th Academy Awards’ shortlist for Best Documentary Feature Film.
The Eternal Memory tells the story of a Chilean couple, Augusto Góngora and Paulina Urrutia, as they navigate their lives upon receiving Augusto’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The film’s official description states: “The Eternal Memory tells a profound and moving love story that balances vibrant individual and collective remembrance with the longevity of an unbreakable human bond. Augusto and Paulina have been together and in love for 25 years ago. Eight years ago, their lives were forever changed by Augusto’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. As one of Chile’s most prominent cultural commentators and television presenters, Augusto is no stranger to building an archive of memory. Now, he turns that work to his own life, trying to hold on to his identity with the help of his beloved Paulina, whose own pre-eminence as a famous actress and Chilean Minister of Culture predates her ceaselessly inventive manner of engaging with her husband. Day by day, the couple face this challenge head-on, relying on the tender affection and sense of humor shared between them that remains, remarkably, fully intact.”
The Eternal Memory is directed and produced by Maite Alberdi, who has another hit documentary, The Mole Agent. Juan De Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, and Rocío Jadue also helped finance the feature. Nina L. Diaz, Liza Burnett Fefferman, and Sheila Nevins served as executive producers on behalf of MTV. Additionally, it is a production from Micromundo and Fabula.
