If you are one of the thousands of people still subscribed to the MoviePass ticket purchasing service, there’s a chance that your credit or debit card information has been leaked. It has just been reported that MoviePass has suffered a massive data breach and now, according to TechCrunch, over 161 million customer records have been leaked out to the public. Apparently that number is still increasing.
Some of the leaked information contained generic messages like login notifications but, as stated earlier, a lot of the data involves debit and credit card numbers that customers gave to the company, as well as the personal email addresses of MoviePass subscribers. This data breach, which some sources claim was discovered months ago, apparently occurred because one of the company’s critical servers was left unprotected.
This data leak is yet another black eye for MoviePass, which has been struggling for awhile now financially. In 2018, Forbes reported that the other ticket services like AMC Theater’s Stubs A-List were severly cutting into MoviePass’ profits. And, just this year, MoviePass ran into major trouble when it was revealed that the company was secretly changing its users’ passwords in order to prevent customers from purchasing tickets.
With all the controversy surrounding MoviePass, it would be a miracle for the company to survive.
