Room stars Brie Larson (Short Term 12, The Gambler) as a mother desperate to give her son a normal and happy upbringing. The challenge is that they have been held captive together for the past five years in a cramped ten-by-ten foot room. The teaser portrays a heartwarming mother-son relationship in which they tell stories, have fun in the bath, and dance around together. The heartfelt tone deteriorates, however, as Larson finally finds them a way out and their secluded world suddenly becomes exponentially larger.
Based off the novel by Emma Donoghue, the script was adapted by the Irish author herself and directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Frank). The film also stars young actor Jacob Tremblay (Smurfs 2), William H. Macy (TV’s Shameless), Joan Allen (The Bourne Identity), and Megan Park (What If).
Room will be making its way to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September and will likely be pushed by its distributor A24 for awards consideration – particularly for Larson, who is becoming a highly respected indie actress within the film community. A24 plans to give the film a wide release on October 16, 2015.
