After Mortal Kombat II released their Uncaged Fury trailer featuring Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, they have released the first official trailer for the sequel. It seems as though Johnny is the protagonist, as he is recruited by Raiden and Sonya Blade as one of the champions of Mortal Kombat to save his world.
Other fan favorite characters making their debut are Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph, Bi-Han, played by Joe Taslim, Jade, played by Tati Gabrielle, and more. Returnees for the film include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion and Josh Lawson as Kano.
One of the major elements of this sequel is the introduction of Urban portraying Johnny Cage. He is a fan favorite character as Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s The Boys, but some are still not convinced he is right for the role of Johnny. Lewis Tan is among those who believe Urban was the right choice, and says that Urban has a “really interesting take on Johnny Cage.”
He said, “He’s bringing a really interesting take on Johnny Cage. I can’t talk about too much, but I can say personally that he’s a great guy and we had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs on set, and I like what he’s doing with the character. I think it’s really unique, it’s maybe different from what people are expecting, but I think he’s such [a] good actor. He’s been around for a long time, done a lot of great roles, and a lot of great franchises himself. So yeah, he’s no stranger to this type of thing, so he’s bringing something really special.”
The first Mortal Kombat, released in 2021, was a hit for Warner Bros. The film debuted simultaneously in theaters and on Max (which will soon return to the name HBO Max) and earned over $84 million at the box office against its $55 million budget. It was also the streamer’s most successful launch.
The film was met with mixed reviews, landing a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences enjoyed the action and gore, landing it an 85% audience score.
Mortal Kombat II is coming to theaters on October 24, 2025. Check out the action-packed trailer below.
