While plans for Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War may have fallen through, Marvel fans may yet see Spider-Man team up with the Avengers in a future film. Unfortunately for fans of Amazing Spider-Man or Sam Raimi’s trilogy, more emails reveal that Marvel wants to start from scratch. If Spider-Man appears in the MCU, it will be a completely new character played by someone other than Andrew Garfield.
Considering that the rumored deal would give Marvel creative control over the character, they will probably get their way if the two studios come to an agreement. Garfield might have caught wind of these rumblings when he went on record saying that he was not a fan of Amazing Spider-Man 2. Garfield’s career will likely continue to rise even without a superhero franchise, he is set to appear in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. For those concerned about Spider-Man getting rebooted for a THIRD time in the past 15 years, fear not, Marvel does not want to rehash the origin story, the Masked Menace will make his (possible) debut already in costume. Officially, Sony is still working on several new films in its Amazing Spider-Man Universe including Sinister Six, Venom, and two more ASM movies.
More leaked emails suggest that Marvel wants Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, to take over as the new producers of potential Marvel Spider-Man films. Even if such movies never come to pass, the Russoes may still have plenty of work as the rumored directors of Avengers: Infinity War, the two part finale to the MCU (so far). Joss Whedon’s contract will be up for renewal after Avengers: Age of Ultron. If that film matches the success of the first Avengers film, he could ask for a much higher price, one that Marvel may not want to pay. Now that this information has been made public, expect to hear Marvel or Sony make an official comment fairly soon.
