Organizers of the upcoming 2016 Cannes Film Festival have added few more titles to the mix for their 69th iteration of the venerable film institution. Most notable, The Separation‘s Asghar Farhadi will debut his latest drama, The Salesman, in the official competition. While the plot of the film is mostly unknown, the Farsi-language film appears to be inspired in sorts by Arthur Miller’s landmark drama Death of a Salesman. Farhadi’s The Separation was widely acclaimed and took home the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film in 2012; his 2013 drama The Past played in competition at Cannes and won actress Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) the Best Actress prize.
Additionally, Starred Up and Young Adam director David Mackenzie will premiere his latest work, Hell or High Water, in the Un Certain Regard sidebar adding bit of star power to the line-up as the film features Chris Pine (Into the Woods), Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) and Oscar winner Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart). Another ingredient of star power will be put on the Croisette as the Mel Gibson‘s headlined Blood Father has been added as a Midnight Screening; Jean-Francois Richet (Mesrine) directs the New Mexico-set thriller that features Gibson as an ex-con trying to assist his estranged teenage daughter.
The 2016 Cannes Film Festival will also premiere, as special screenings, the American documentary Wrong Elements, the French dramedy Fool Moon and the Tunisian thriller Chouf. Cannes will begin on May 11th and run through the 22nd – Woody Allen’s Café Society – starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll and Steve Carrel – will open the fest and Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller will preside over the jury.
