The Sony Marvel Universe continues to expand despite many people wishing it wouldn’t. Morbius is set to hit theaters this Friday, and although it hasn’t officially reached audiences yet, the critics’ Rotten Tomatoes score for the film sits at catastrophic 17% with 102 reviews, the lowest of any Spider-Man-related film ever, as Comicbook.com points out.
The film stars Jared Leto in the titular role of Dr. Michael Morbius, a famed Marvel comics character who has frequent run-ins with Spider-Man. Morbius is a biochemist turned paranormal vampire whose morality and need to feed on human blood to survive, leave him in a never-ending dilemma. Morbius is Leto’s first outing in the Marvel universe.
Despite the film being under the Sony Marvel Universe umbrella, fans have speculated for some time that this would be the film to unite this universe with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (or Vulture), first seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony crossover film Spider-Man: Homecoming, has appeared in nearly every trailer, seemingly hinting at the first explicit connection between universes. However, early reviews seem to say that these connections have been removed or are not overly important to the film. It remains to be seen how the film will pan out, but fan expectations have most definitely been tempered after the first critic scores have come to light.
Morbius hits theaters this Friday, April 1, and is directed by Daniel Espinosa. Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson also star in the film.
