‘Moonlight’ Actor Ashton Sanders Lands a Lead Role in ‘The Equalizer 2’

The extended cast for Sony’s The Equalizer sequel is coming together nicely as the film is gearing up to start production in Boston next month. The next actor to join the project is Ashton Sanders, according to Deadline, who played Moonlight‘s main character during his teenage years.

Denzel Washington, the film’s returning star, will act as father figure to Sanders’ character, which also likely means that he will be protecting him from the film’s new antagonist being played by Pedro Pascal. Additionally, Sanders will be joining returning cast members Bill Pullman and Oscar-winner Melissa Leo. Original director Antoine Fuqua is also back for round two.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps; however, it is safe to assume that we will see Washington’s Robert McCall once again single handedly take down a major nefarious syndicate similar to the original film’s Russian mob in order to protect those less fortunate. Richard Wenk, who penned the original as well as the recent Magnificent Seven remake, wrote the sequel’s script.

This will be Sanders second major role after his appearance in the Best Picture winner from last year, Moonlight. Being a couple years out of filming from that project, Sanders will likely hit screens next year as a much more matured actor. He will next be seen alongside Rupert Wyatt in Captive State, set to hit theaters next August.

The Equalizer 2 is slated for a September 14, 2018 release.
