Miramax is confirmed to be developing an animated film based on the classic Halloween song, “Monster Mash.” Miramax has a diverse film catalog, but they have much experience developing Halloween and horror films. They developed franchises such as Scream, Hellraiser, Halloween and Scary Movie. They have also taken charge of recent spooky themed projects such as The Addams Family animated films and Wednesday.
Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman said this about the announcement. “For more than 60 years, nothing has said Halloween quite like the “Monster Mash.” We’re thrilled to be entrusted by the Pickett and Capizzi families and to be partnering with Reservoir Media to bring this iconic song to life as an animated musical for all audiences. It’s a project that celebrates the fun and spirit of the original — and should become a perennial “graveyard smash” for years to come.” The 1962 song was performed by Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers, who co-wrote it alongside Lenny Capizzi. The song has been a Halloween classic ever since it was released, always climbing back up the charts come October. “Monster Mash” has a narrative structure to its lyrics, meaning the film could potentially adapt the same story. A mad scientist (Boris) creates a monster who suddenly wakes up and starts doing the Monster Mash. Later in the song, other classic monsters join the mash, including zombies, ghouls, Wolf-Man, Igor, Dracula and Dracula’s son.
Miramax has worked with a variety of distributers over the years, so it is unclear who will be releasing the film. Depending on the company, the film could be released theatrically or be a simple streaming release. Animated Halloween films have historically performed well, with films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, ParaNorman and the Hotel Transylvania films all being holiday classics. There is no release window or crew announcements as of yet, but stay tuned for more updates on the film.
