Mattel and Nickelodeon are coming together to develop both a new animated series and live-action film of Monster High. Both the show and film are set to premiere in 2022. Monster High, the creepy toy line and book series by Lisi Harrison has had a TV series before, but this will be the franchise’s first live-action movie. The film will be featuring popular characters such as Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura and Frankie Stein, all inspired by classic movie monsters.
According to Deadline, Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6) will write the musical alongside Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog). Production on the Monster High movie is being overseen by Nickelodeon’s SVP Live-Action Zack Olin and SVP Live-Action Scripted Content Shauna Phelan. Adam Bonnett is also leading the live-action project for Mattel.
President of Nickelodeon Animation Ramsey Naito stated: “These classic monsters have always captured kids’ imaginations and we are so excited and proud to welcome Monster High to our brand for a new generation of kids”. No casting has been confirmed yet for the new Monster High film, and no production start-date has been revealed. With both the TV series and film being on the way in 2022, it is safe to assume that production will begin sooner rather than later.
