It seems that Monkey Man and The First Omen will be battling it out at the box office this weekend. Monkey Man is Dev Patel’s directorial debut, he also stars in the film as the protagonist named Kid. The First Omen is a prequel to the 1976 film The Omen, which starred Gregory Peck.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “[Monkey Man is] A revenge-thriller set in India, Patel’s critically acclaimed film is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, as well as by the John Wick series…The First Omen, a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 film, stars Nell Tiger Free as a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the Catholic church when she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”
Both films are predicted to make between $13 and $14 million in their opening weekend. Monkey Man is being produced by Jordan Peele among others. The First Omen is being produced by David S. Goyer and Keith Levine.
Given that these films have two very different target audiences and plots, it will be interesting to see which film comes out on top.
