‘Moana’ Live Action Fails To Make Splash With 43 Million Opening

Despite it’s charming attention to detail and one-to-one recreation, the live action Moana doesn’t create the same splash that its animated counterpart did. The film is likely to have set off red flags at the Mouse House, with a 43 million for its opening weekend. This might have been enough to prove to Disney that fans thought it was too soon for a live action adaption of the acclaimed animated feature. Even so, Moana was still able to dethrone Minions and Monsters, which only netted 20.5 million in its second weekend still continuing its below expectation performance. Toy Story 5 came in third place for its fourth week with 18.5 million, which brought it up to a grand total of 403.77 million domestic.

Fourth place went to newcomer Evil Dead Burn with 13.7 million, with the horror flick just falling short of the top three. Young Washington took fifth place, rounding out the top five with 6.4 million in its second week.

The Invite brought home 5.7 million and its third week a massive jump in the wake of its wide release. Obsession came in seventh with 3.8 million in week nine, sporting a hefty total of $253.3 million domestically. Supergirl came in eighth place this week, dropping down to 3.56 million in its third week, cementing it as a flop for the DCU. The film wasn’t able to draw the same audience as the predecessor Superman was last year.

Disclosure Day came in ninth with 3.2 million after 5 weeks in theaters, beating Backrooms which dropped down to tenth place with 1.48 million in its seventh week. It currently sits at a domestic total of a staggering 194.1 million for the small scale low budget film.
