A stranger than usual box office weekend all things considered. While an anticipated fumble was expected with Kraven The Hunter due to the low preview earnings the film is off to a very rough start for the box office only snagging third place for it’s opening weekend more so than the other predecessors of this seasons under preformed block busters that are still hanging on to the top 10. While it has been known for a while that Sony intended to wrap up it’s Spider-Man universe adjacent Marvel properties with Kraven it was still an unknown for the future involvement of Sony in any Marvel projects going forward with the exception of the animated Spiderverse films.
This weekend also brought another loss from this year for Warner Bros. With its anime Lord Of The Rings film underperforming from a hopeful promotion campaign. While The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim still garnered some attention landing it a spot at number 5 it doesn’t have the same audience grabbing attention that other anime films have had for box office weekends with only 4.6 million in profits to its name now.
With Moana 2 sitting at number 1 for its third week it will likely stay there as families come and go for the holidays until Disney’s next slated release with Mufasa and the anticipated juggernaut that Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is shaping up to be. Whether or not Moana 2 and Wicked plan to sit in their respective places at 1 and 2 will be seen as the two leading ladies films bat more home runs up taking turns leading the game. With Wicked gaining recognition for the upcoming awards season its likely not to be in any hurry to leave the top 10.
Gladiator ll landed in 4th for its fourth week. The Ridley Scott epic making no more noticeable movement but still landing ahead of the The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim premier.
Red One stuck around for the top 10 as well with 4.4 million added to its crawl to break even after a slow start. With its holiday theme and family appeal its likely to cross that line back into the black further down the line.
Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 came in at 7th. The Indian film another in a chain of recent hits to come from Bollywood, hopefully this success will see more international films be brought to theaters and made available to audiences.
Interstellar saw a rerelease last week for theaters and found itself back on the box office top 10 with 3.3 million to its cumulative 200 million. Considered one of the most iconic films of the last decade its nice to see the Christopher Nolan film be expiranced in theaters once more adding another positive win for rereleases. At 8th Interstellar is still pursuing new horizons.
In 9th is Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem another rerelease for this weekend. Interstella 5555 is an anime film that acted as a visual component for the Daft Punk band’s album Discovery with the album being the entire audio base for the film with no dialog. Originally a 2003 release 21 years later it appears to still hold up.
Rounding out the tp 10 is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever with its sixth week in theaters and will also probably be staying a little bit longer as it’s name sake holiday approaches. Christmas Pageant managed to knock off Y2K a more recent release but with Nosferatu around the corner it was an inevitable class of genre appeal.
