Tom Cruise is back on the big screen with another long awaited film. Last year saw Top Gun: Maverick finally fly into theaters and to immense fanfare. It made $1.49 billion worldwide and topped the domestic box office for the year. Critics and general audiences ate up the film and finally brought movie theaters back to their glory.
This year sees Cruise return to the role of Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment in the action series. In an effort to try and beat out upcoming competition, the movie released on July 12th, and to franchise record, according to Hollywood Reporter.
In it’s Wednesday showings, it pulled in $15.5 million, including $7 million in Tuesday preview showings. The preview showings mark a new highpoint for the franchise, and the overall openings put it on track for an estimated $90 million for the first weekend. That would also be another record for the series.
While the new outing is on track for a good opening, financially speaking, the critical side of things are also showing massive promise, as Deadline reports. As of writing this, CinemaScore gave the film an A, Rotten Tomatoes has it at 96% certified fresh critic score, along with a 95% audience score, and an 8.2/10 on IMDb. Word of mouth is going to be a big factor with this one, as well, with many holding it up against the likes of recent tentpole blockbuster, Fast X.
With the track being lain for this one, it’s likely that it’ll edge out Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny. The newest Indy adventure took home $83.8 million in it’s Friday-Tuesday totals, where as Mission is on track to $90 million. Mission: Impossible also has far higher appeal in overseas market, while Indiana Jones fares better domestically than internationally. The franchise itself is near unknown in some of the biggest film markets, such as China, but other international markets are eagerly anticipating the new Mission.
Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One is now playing in theaters, and stars Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell.
