There are very few franchises that can truly compare to the box office stealing power that the ‘Minions’ series has. After the sleeper hit ‘Despicable Me’ took over the world in July of 2010. A large part of that world stealing power comes from the charisma of the yellow gremlins known as minions. These little guys have since become a pop culture phenomenon, it is genuinely hard to go about a day of social media consumption and not come about these little fellows.
With the above considered, it is not surprising that the newest Minions movie has just outperformed Top Gun: Maverick‘s opening box office in only a couple of days. Minions: The Rise of Gru had an incredible $127M box office opening, while Top Gun: Maverick had a $124M box office opening weekend. The figures for the film are showing, that of all of the franchises under Universal’s belt, the Minions franchise is now a tentpole picture for the studio.
The film is mainly targeting young children and young parents, with a surprising amount of Gen Z support from, unsurprisingly, TikTok which definitely helped in advertising the film. Will this lead to more ad agencies astroturfing on social media? Although we don’t know the answer to that question, what we do know is that we definitely will be seeing more minions movies for as long as they are profitable. The film is set to generate a total of $202M worldwide by the end of the three-day holiday.
