According to an exclusive from Variety, Whiplash star Miles Teller has been officially cast as the son of Goose (played by Anthony Edwards in the original Top Gun) in Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 classic.
Teller will portray Goose’s son, who happens to be Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) new protege. Set in an era of drone technology and advanced fifth generation fighter jets, the film focuses on the new era of modern warfare, which means that the intense aerial dogfights from the first film will be a thing of the past.
Along with Cruise, Val Kilmer returns as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Joe Kosinski (Oblivion) will serve as director.
Teller has quite a hefty resume to show off in case anyone questions how he landed such a big role in a prestigious sequel. Along with a BAFTA nomination for his work in Whiplash, Teller can be seen in Project X, That Awkward Moment, War Dogs, the Divergent series, and Only the Brave. He also just wrapped up shooting the Amazon series Too Old to Die Young with director Nic Refn.
Top Gun: Maverick is set for a theatrical release on July 12, 2019, and it’s distributed by Paramount and Skydance.
