Peter Parker isn’t our only wall-crawler. That’s right, a recent casting call suggests Miles Morales could be called to action as Sony’s upcoming animated Spider-Man film.
Back in April 2015, Sony announced at CinemaCon that the studio would be providing the masses with an animated Spider-Man film, but not until now have we had any information to speculate what character would be taking on the great responsibilities of Spider-Man. According to ComicBookMovie.com, a casting call (that has since been removed) on Backstage.com was posted for a Sony Pictures Animation film titled, Cabin Fever. It’s not the title of the listing that raises questions, which is probably nothing more than a cover, but the description of the film and its characters Terrance and Pete that raise some questions.
The movie is described as “the adventures of two unlikely friends, Terrence and Pete-” Let’s get to know both, shall we?
On the casting call, Terrance is described as a “young African-American/Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn; he is new to this suburban school and now feeling out of place, overwhelmed, pressured with new responsibilities, and dealing with puberty; while trying to fit in he must do his best to stay out of trouble; along the way in developing his identity he’s losing old friends but now making a new one, Pete.” Comic fans already know just who that description fits- Miles Morales. It’s safe to assume this because in the comics Miles does, in fact, feel overwhelmed and out of place, specifically due to his new powers and whether or not he’s a good person. If Sony really wants to dive deep into the long box, they could pull some runs that explore his family which would provide plenty of drama. For instance, his father is a former criminal and his wayward uncle continues to commit crimes under the alias of The Prowler.
Backing this speculation further is Pete’s description- “a young, slightly geeky, Asian-American teen; he’s smart, sweet, and encouraging; although very unlike any of the friends Terrence had in his old Brooklyn neighborhood, Pete proves to be a good fit for Terrence making good decisions.” This once again is a pretty good description of another character named Ganke.
It’s good to keep in mind that this is all speculation, but you can’t deny the similarities. Why not branch off into other versions of the character Marvel has to offer? The animated Spider-Man feature was to be directed by The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller, but since has been assigned to Bob Persichetti and has also been pushed from a summer 2018 release to Christmas.
