Mike Flanagan And Stephen King To Reunite To Develop Warner Bros. Feature Adaptation Of ‘The Mist’

While Stephen King has worked with many acclaimed directors for his various adaptations, it is safe to say no filmmaker has adapted more of King’s works than Mike Flanagan, who has directed King-adapted features such as 2017’s Gerald’s Game, 2019’s Doctor Sleep, and 2024’s Life of Chuck. Flanagan also has two King-inspired tv series in the works and is set to adapt King’s iconic works of Carrie and The Dark Tower. Now the frequent collaborators are confirmed to reunite a sixth time for Warner Bros’ adaptation of King’s famous 1980 novella with Flanagan set to direct and write a screenplay.

As per Deadline, The Mist centers around a “small town in Maine” that is engulfed by a “thick mysterious fog from which creatures emerge to attack the townsfolk,” that ends with a group of survivors seeking refuge in a grocery store. Similar to the bulk of King’s works, the destruction of social order causes eventual total chaos and ends up being the true threat to the characters rather than the established antagonist. The Mist comes from King’s collection of short stories, Skeleton Crew and was previously adapted into a 2007 film directed by Frank Darabont as well as a 2017 tv series helmed by Christian Torpe.

Tyler Thompson and Flanagan will produce under the Red Room banner alongside Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone. Alexandra Magistro is set to executive produce through Red Room. Flanagan has been a prolific influence on modern horror within the past decade, with his works like Oculus, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher blending humanity with terror in a way that leaves audiences yearning for more.

There is no confirmed production start date or release date as of yet.
