Variety reports that actress Michaela Coel has officially been announced to join the cast of the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Coel is currently filming at Atlanta’s Pinewood Studios, where production began last month.
Her recent work includes the HBO Max series I May Destroy You, in which Coel herself wrote and starred in, and which propelled her to international fame. She has received four Emmy nominations for her work on the show just earlier this month. Coel’s other credits also include Netflix’s Black Mirror and Chewing Gum, and feature films Been So Long and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
As of now, Coel’s character in the Black Panther sequel has not yet been revealed. The script of the film was reworked following former star Chadwick Boseman’s death from colon cancer a year ago. Much is unknown about the film besides the fact that director Ryan Coogler is returning to the helm, Boseman’s character T’Challa will not be recast, and of course the film’s title. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set for release in July 2022.
