“The Night He Came Home.”
John Carpenter introduced a unique vision to horror movies and created a staple for the slasher genre when he released Halloween on October 25, 1978. It tells the story of a young boy who savagely murders his sister (in a well presented opening sequence) and eventually escapes the mental hospital where he was housed to return to Haddonfield, Illinois to start a brutal killing spree. Made on a small budget of around $300,000, it would become one of the most successful independent films ever, grossing $70 million in the box office. Despite mixed reviews from critics initially, the film was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2006 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”, a rare feat for horror films. A slew of sequels followed for years to come and was remade by Rob Zombie in 2007. Michael Myers has become a horror icon for his mask, his slow patient walking and total lack of emotion. The mask itself symbolizes no human emotion whatsoever, a faceless evil.
Cinelife Entertainment, the event cinema division of Spotlight Cinema Networks, has teamed up with International Pictures and Trancas International Films to bring the John Carpenter classic back to theaters in anticipation of the direct sequel being released on October 19. Jamie Lee Curtis, who made her film debut in Halloween, returns to battle with evil one last time in the new Halloween, which is being directed by David Gordon Green. Early reviews are overall positive and practically “wipes the slate clean” of lackluster sequels.
Halloween will return to theaters starting September 27 and will play on 1,000 screens in more than twenty countries. Whether you’ve seen the film before or its your first time, Halloween is a classic film in every sense of the word. Scary, thrilling and unique for its time, Halloween set the standard for slasher films that followed thereafter. With that iconic movie theme and the story of good vs evil, its more than enough reason to return to Haddonfield once more.
Tickets are available for purchase as the movie will only play in select theaters. So, don’t forget to bring your friends, bring that revised Captain Kirk mask and call the babysitter (or maybe not) and return to the film that started it all. Michael is coming home once again!
