Having started production all the way back in fall 2014, director Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines) finally has a release date for his next film, The Light Between Oceans, slated for September 2, 2016. Starring Michael Fassbender (Shame) and breakout-star Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), the story follows a couple who happen upon a baby and her dead father in a boat that lands onshore. They decide to keep the child and raise it as their own.
The reasons are unclear as to why the film was pushed back so long, but one may be from both Fassbender’s and Vikander’s award season run this year and not wanting to muddy the waters. Cianfrance has had a strong run of films ever since his renowned romantic drama Blue Valentine, so this story seems to be right up his alley and should prove to be a possible Oscar contender come 2017. The Light Between Oceans will also be the last of two Dreamworks films to be distributed through Disney, with the other being The BFG from Steven Spielberg this coming summer.
Vikander has Jason Bourne coming soon and Fassbender has the hugely-anticipated video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed this year, giving them each big chances to gain even more popularity with fans leading up to this film.
