According to Variety, Michael Fassbender is in the final stages of signing on to lead Taika Waititi‘s next feature film Next Goal Wins. The film is based on a 2015 documentary about a Dutch coach who attempts to turn a team of ragtag American Samoa soccer players into winners.
The screenplay was written by both Waititi and Iain Morris. Filming is expected to start before Waititi begins shooting the next Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder. Reportedly, Marvel wants the next Thor film to be shot in early 2020 since they gave the film a release date of November 5, 2021. Fox Searchlight is handling the distribution of Next Goal Wins and the directors of the 2015 documentary, Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, will serve as producers.
Waititi recently finished premiering his comedy film Jojo Rabbit at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8. Waititi directs and stars as Adolf Hitler (yes really) in the film, which has received mixed to positive reviews on websites like Rotten Tomatoes due to the subject matter.
Michael Fassbender recently starred as mutant Magneto in the X-Men superhero film Dark Phoenix, which came out this summer. Fassbender has been portraying Magneto since the 2011 film X-Men: First Class, starring alongside James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, and January Jones.
We will update with future casting information about this film.
