At the peak (thus far) of Michael Cera’s acting career comes yet another project, although less mainstream than This Is the End or Arrested Development; the film follows an American exploring Chile who haphazardly befriends an unusual extrovert named Crystal Fairy.
Cera stars alongside Gaby Hoffman (Field of Dreams), who has been acclaimed by critics to provide a “remarkable, funny, and touching performance.” Critics rave about the film overall, saying, “Crystal Fairy does get a little heavy toward the end (I had flashes of Breakfast Club, but only in the best possible way) and the characters really are quite something. Most importantly, though, this is a comedy, and the low-key, goofy first two-thirds are a trip worth taking.” (Jordan Hoffman, film.com)
Along with Crystal Fairy, Cera has been working with the film’s director Sebastian Silva on another project, Magic Magic, which also premiered at Sundance. Cera has never been shy about working in the indie realm (as big a hit as 2007’s Juno became, it was, after all, an independent production), but both Crystal Fairy and Magic Magic seem to be pushing the actor in new directions. He is, perhaps, not eschewing his socially awkward shtick altogether, but certainly expanding on it.
