MGM’s ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ Will Get a Sequel Distributed by Paramount

The 2010 comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, originally released solely by MGM, will get a sequel with distribution handled by Paramount. The sequel will bring back stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, and will add Adam Scott to the cast, though it is unknown if John Cusack or Chevey Chase will reprise their roles. Director Steve Pink and writer Josh Heald will also return. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has a planned release date for 2014.

The original film followed three friends (John Cusack, Corddry, and Robinson) as they traveled back in time through a hot tub to relive a day that had far-reaching consequences on the rest of their lives. The film ended with all three finding ways to better themselves and create a new future free of their respective vices. Hot Tub Time Machine was a commercial success for MGM making over $64 million on a $14 million budget. MGM has been attempting to get a sequel off the ground since at least January of this year.

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 will not be the first collaboration for MGM and Paramount, though judging by previous efforts including G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, the pairing does not necessarily equate to success. Heald and Pink have had some difficulty parlaying their efforts in the first film into larger projects, but the grassroots support for Time Machine could buoy both them and the movie itself. No timeframe for production or release had been announced as of yet.
