Trailer Released For ‘3 Days to Kill’ Starring Kevin Costner

Watch the beginning of this trailer without any knowledge of what movie it advertises, and you’d be excused for thinking you’d stumbled upon another ad for the forthcoming Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. But no, it’s for another movie entirely: 3 Days to Kill, an action thriller starring the recently resurgent Kevin Costner. And you won’t find him playing a mere handler for Chris Pine here; rather, he’s a top agent/assassin for an…agency. The movie’s IMDb profile suggests that he’s a secret service agent, but given that it seems intentional no real agency is referred to in the trailer, never mind that Costner’s character, Ethan Runner, seems a lot more in the Bourne/Bond/Bauer (/Ryan) mold than a bodyguard, so we’ve got our doubts.

And really, there doesn’t seem to be a lot this movie is playing close to the chest. The main drama stems from Runner having to come out of retirement – where he had hoped to reconnect with his daughter (Hailee Steinfeld) and wife (Connie Nelson) – due to a mysterious disease that a former associate (Amber Heard) conveniently has an experimental treatment for. Combine the character’s surname with the obviously dichotomous poster (above), and it’s not hard to guess where the film ends up thematically.

But even considering all that, the team behind the movie breeds hope that, particularly given the genre, there will be some fun to find. 3 Days to Kill was directed by McG (This Means WarCharlie’s Angels) from a script written by Luc Besson (The Family, Taken 2) and Adi Hasak (Shadow Conspiracy, From Paris With Love) and produced by Ryan Kavanaugh (Out of the Furnace, Haywire) and his Relativity Media. 3 Days to Kill will also benefit from relatively little competition. Pompeii, starring Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harrington, releases alongside 3 Days to Kill on February 21, but hits couple weeks after big name movies like George Clooney’s The Monuments Men and the Robocop reboot
