MGM is picking up the rights to Dwayne Johnson and WWE Studios’ new wrestling drama Fighting with My Family for around $17.5 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter the film had been selling at Berlin’s EFM before MGM bought out the worldwide rights.
The film is set to be written and directed by The U.K. Office’s Stephen Merchant, and Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, Lena Headey and Nick Frost are already set to star in it. Dwayne Johnson will be the executive producer, as well as have a small cameo part in the film.
The project is based on the true life story of WWE Superstar Paige and her family full of professional wrestlers. According to the synopsis released in Berlin, it is inspired by a Channel 4 British documentary of a similar name, The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family. The story follows a family of four, former wrestler father Ricky, his wife Julia, and their children Saraya and Zak, who make their living traveling across the United States, performing live in small venues. Drama ensues after both their children are given the chance to become professionals, by auditioning for WWE. The family sees it as an opportunity to improve their lives, however the life of a WWE Superstar is more than they bargained for.
