Melissa McCarthy is most commonly known for her roles in comedy films, where she has made herself a staple in the genre. She looks to be tackling more of a serious role in the new film Can You Ever Forgive Me, where she will play literary forger Lee Israel.
Can You Ever Forgive Me is based on the true story of Lee Israel, a popular magazine writer and celebrity profiler in the 1970’s and 1980’s, who worked on famous celebrities including Katharine Hepburn, Estee Lauder, and Tallulah Bankhead. Her success ended quickly, however, because she could not keep up with the constantly changing times. She learns about the money she can make from original letters of famous writers, which leads her to begin forging the letters in order to make a significantly large amount of money. Her antics begin to be noticed, and people begin to hunt her down and arrest her for her crimes.
McCarthy stars alongside a solid cast including Richard E Grant, Joanna Adler, Julie Ann Emery, and Marc Evan Jackson. The film is directed by Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) with a script by Nicole Holofcener. The film is set to release sometime in 2018. Check out the trailer below.
