Melissa McCarthy Earns Her First Writers Credit For ‘Tammy’

With female representation painfully lacking in the business of movies, Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy is a highly anticipated 2014 film. McCarthy gets her first writing credit and stars in the comedy directed by her husband Ben Falcone.  McCarthy’s 2013 contributions to the industry were Identity Thief, with Jason Bateman, grossing over $173 million world-wide, and The Heat, with Sandra Bullock, pulling in $240 million Internationally.

Tammy is a road-trip comedy in the Identity Thief  vein, only this road trip includes Susan Sarandon as Tammy’s (McCarthy) foul-mouthed, hard-drinking and partying grandmother. Tammy is a married housewife who loses her job and learns her husband, played by Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed) has been cheating. She decides to get away for a while and clear her head. Comedy legend Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters, Behind the Candelabra) acts the part of her father-in law, and Allison Janney (The Way, Way Back) plays her mom.

McCarthy and Falcone are producing along with New Line Cinema. Tammy opens July 2, 2014.
