Amazon’s MGM Studios is currently developing a sequel to Mel Brooks’ cult classic Spaceballs, which originally came out in 1987. The sequel is targeted for a mid-2027 theatrical release. Now 98, Mel Brooks has been confirmed to return as Yogurt, as well as serve as a producer. Josh Greenbaum heads the project by directing. The script will be written by Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Josh Gad will co-write, produce, and star in the sequel.
Many of the original cast members, such as Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), and Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), have confirmed they will reprise their parts. Rick Moranis, who initially stepped away from all on-screen acting in the late ’90s, will make his return after more than thirty years.
New cast additions include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer (as Destiny), and Bill Pullman’s son Lewis Pullman, who starred in recent hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Thunderbolts*, who plays Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Princess Vespa. Lewis Pullman has spoken about how significant an experience it is working by his father’s side.
Advertising and promotion for the sequel lean into Spaceballs’ trademark humor. The sequel was announced on social media by Brooks in a teaser styled to imitate the classic Star Wars opening crawl. The teaser announced that while franchises like Star Wars, Dune, and Marvel have continued for decades through sequels, prequels, and TV shows, “there has only ever been one Spaceballs… Until now.”
Primarily, the sequel is meant to revive the original comedic style, bring in new generations of talent, and deliver the same satirical sci-fi humor and wit in a 2027 theatrical release.
