The bigheaded, blue villain is back, and audiences and critics alike are disappointed. The sequel to Megamind entitled Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate has received abysmally low ratings on Rotten Tomato.
The sequel, which was marketed as a sequel to the original movie, as well as, the pilot for the new Peacock series, Megamind Rules!, received a shocking 0% from critics and 7% from audiences. These scores are a stark difference from the original movies scores, which were well received by critics and audiences. The original film scored a 73% from critics and a 72% from audiences.
The movie was released for streaming on Peacock on March 1st, as of now, it is one of only 44 movies on Rotten Tomatoes to receive a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The majority of the criticism surrounding the movie has been centered around the significantly lower budget of the sequel. The budget for the original movie was $130 million. The sequel’s budget is still unknown, however, the budget is known to have been split between the sequel and the episodic television series. The low budget resulted in a lower-grade animation style.
A large majority of the all-star cast has also been replaced in the sequel, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt, who voiced the original characters in the film, did not return for the sequel. The new cast included Keith Ferguson, Laura Post, Josh Brener, Talon Warburton, Scott Adsit, Chris Sullivan, Tony Hale, Jeanine Mason, and Adam Lambert.
The plot of the second movie follows Megamind, who is now the defender of Metro City against all the evil that comes knocking. MegaMind must go against the supervillain team he was once the leader of to protect to the city he loves. The plot for the new movie has been called ‘uneventful’ and lacking strong antagonists and conflict.
Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate is now streaming on Peacock, so audiences can decide as if the 0% rating is well-founded or not.
